The Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr Mohamed Asim today delivered a statement at the ongoing 45th Session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers, which is being held in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

In delivering his remarks, Minister Asim reaffirmed that the Maldives would remain committed to the ideals and values of the OIC and that of the Muslim Ummah. He stated that the OIC must remain united in tackling the global problems faced by Muslim countries, including on Islamophobia, discrimination and in combating violent extremism. He said that partnerships across the various regions represented in the OIC are crucial to tackling the issues faced by the Islamic world.

Minister Asim also reiterated the historic position of the Maldives in supporting an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, and upheld the Maldives strong objections to the unilateral recognition of Al-Quds Al-Sharif as the Capital of Israel.

Minister Asim urged Member States of the OIC to work with the various parties to find a lasting and sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, and thanked the Bangladesh Government for organizing a field visit to the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazaar for attending delegates.

Lastly, the Minister Asim spoke of the need for smaller countries to be represented in the decision-making bodies of the United Nations, based on equitable geographic distribution and outlined the basis for the Maldives candidature for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the term 2019-2020.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is an international body comprising of 57 countries with large Muslim populations. The Council of Foreign Ministers is an annual gathering of the foreign ministers of Member States to deliberate on issues of concern to the Islamic world. The Maldives became a member of the OIC in 1976.

H.E. Ahmed Mohamed, the Ambassador of Maldives to India, met Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali at Amir Mahal on Friday. During his visit, the Ambassador expressed his interest to learn about the political history of the Nawabs of the Carnatic/Arcot and their religious policies towards non-Muslims, during their rule.

Shazra Abdul Sattar, Deputy Chief of Mission and Minister, Embassy of the Republic of Maldives, New Delhi and the Honorary Consul of Maldives in Chennai, Hisamuddin Papa, were also present. The Prince also offered a shawl and memento to the visiting Ambassador.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim has departed this evening to Dhaka, Bangladesh to attend the 45th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC), scheduled to take place from 5 to 6 May 2018.

The theme of this years’ Session is “Islamic Values for Sustainable Peace, Solidarity and Development”. Minister Asim will be delivering a statement and addressing the Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting during the Session. As is practice, the 45th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers will also review conflict situations in parts of the Muslim world, will discuss issues of international peace and security, Islamophobia, countering terrorism and violent extremism, humanitarian situations, and the situation of Muslim communities.

Minister Asim will be received in Dhaka by Her Excellency Ms Shaan Shakir, Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The Minister is being accompanied from Male’ by Mr. Javed Faizal, Additional Secretary and Mr. Hussain Abdul Latheef Desk Officer.

The Maldives became a Member State of the OIC on 26 July 1976. Since joining the OIC in 1976, Maldives has participated in all regular Summits, Extraordinary Summits and the Foreign Ministers Meetings of the organization.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim, today, met with His Excellency Dr. Yousuf bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen, the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

During the meeting, Minister Asim reaffirmed the importance the Maldives attaches to the OIC and international issues of concern to the Muslim Ummah. He reiterated the commitment of the Government of Maldives in contributing effectively to resolve these issues in close collaboration with the Member States of the OIC and the its Secretariat.

The OIC Secretary General, H.E. Dr. Al-Othaimeen described Maldives as an important member of OIC who has always raised its voice on the issues concerning Muslim Ummah and highlighted the valuable contributions of the Maldives towards its solidarity. Minister Asim was accompanied by His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Secretary, Bilateral and Mr. Javed Faizal, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister Asim also hosted a luncheon in the honour of OIC Secretary General, which was attended by the senior officials of the Ministry.
