Minister Asim calls on the President of the Central African Republic

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Asim called on the President of the Central African Republic Faustin-Archange Touadéra, in New York, on the sidelines of the High Level Meeting on Peace Building and Sustaining Peace, hosted by the President of the General Assembly. The President and the Minister discussed issues of mutual interest in the international discourse, and challenges facing both countries.

Minister Asim is visiting New York to participate in the High Level Meeting on Peace building and Sustaining Peace hosted by the President of the General Assembly, as well as the Ministerial segment of the Economic and Social Commission’s Forum on Financing for Development.

Minister Asim meets with the Pacific Small Island Developing States

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Asim met with the Permanent Representatives of the Pacific Small Island Developing States today, with a view to facilitate greater dialogue and cooperation with the countries of PSIDS. In this regard, he highlighted the close links between the Maldives and the PSIDS, in the international arena, especially on climate change, oceans and sustainable development, including through the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS).

Minister Asim also highlighted the importance of the representation of SIDS, and SIDS interests at the key decision making bodies of the UN, including the Security Council, and the need for the Council to consider emerging issues of significance to global peace and security, such as climate change, and other non-traditional security threats.

The Permanent Representatives thanked the Minister for the leadership of Maldives as Chair of AOSIS, and for participating in the discussion, and sharing the Maldives priorities and ideas moving forward.

The Alliance of Small Island States calls for revision of eligibility criteria for concessional financing: Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Asim

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Asim, speaking for the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), highlighted that most Small Island Developing States (SIDS) do not fit into the traditional development models, and remain trapped in the middle-income trap. The Maldives, is serving its fourth year as Chair of AOSIS.

SIDS are also seeing reversal in development gains due to external shocks, and environmental degradation caused by climate change. And thus, as countries that have structural vulnerabilities, there is a need to revisit the idea of gross income levels as sole indicators of development assistance, stated the Minister.

Minister Asim, welcomed the third ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development followup, and highlighted several important issues for SIDS, such as high debt burdens, and decline in correspondent banking relationships.

The ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development is being held from 23-26 April 2018. Minister Asim is taking part in the Ministerial Segment of the Forum.

Minister Asim meets with several Permanent Representatives to the United Nations

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Asim has met today with several Permanent Representatives in New York today, to discuss issues of mutual interest, especially with regard to the United Nations Security Council. The Maldives is campaigning for support in its bid to become a member of the Council for the term 2019-2020.

Minister Asim is visiting New York to participate in the High Level Meeting on Peace building and Sustaining Peace hosted by the President of the General Assembly, as well as the Ministerial segment of the Economic and Social Commission’s Forum on Financing for Development.

Minister Asim highlights role of UN in making lending environment more hospitable to small States

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Asim, highlighted the challenges faced in leveraging appropriate sources of financing for SIDS, where domestic resource mobilisation is limited. Speaking at the Ministerial Roundtables at the ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development, the Minister highlighted that full collaboration and good faith is necessary between all countries to achieve the transformative changes envisioned in the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Minister Asim is taking part in the Ministerial Segment of the ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development, taking place from 23-26 April 2018.
