In two separate meetings held at the Maldives Embassy in New Delhi, India, Amb H.E. Ahmed Mohamed met with Ambassador of Kazakhstan, H.E. Bulat Sarsenbayev, and Ambassador of Serbia, H.E. Vladimir Maric.

H.E. Ahmed Mohamed elaborately discussed ways to strengthen bilateral and multilateral ties between both countries.They also exchanged views on ongoing economic and political developments in the countries.

A high-level delegation from the European Union (EU), led by Mrs. Paola Pampaloni, Deputy Managing Director for Asia Department of the European External Action Service (EEAS), called on Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives H.E Dr. Mohamed Asim.

At the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning, Foreign Minister Asim and Mrs. Pampaloni discussed ways of further enhancing cooperation with the Maldives and the European Union on various sectors. Discussions were also focused on key thematic areas such as countering terrorism and violent extremism, climate change, environmental protection, strengthening regional cooperation, as well as other important issues of mutual interest. Minister Asim will also host a luncheon in honor of Mrs Paola Pampaloni and the delegates.

Foreign Minister Dr. Asim was accompanied by the Foreign Secretary, His Excellency Ahmed Sareer, H.E Ahmed Khaleel, Secretary Bilateral, H.E Dr. Fazeel Najeeb, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, H.E Ahmed Shiaan, Ambassador of Maldives to the European Union and Ms. Shiuneen Rasheed, Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Special Envoy of the President of Maldives,  Foreign Minister H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim, today concluded his official visit to India .

During this visit the Minister had fruitful discussions with the Indian leadership. These included a call on Prime Minister of India, H.E Narendra Modi and meetings with External Affairs Minister H.E Sushma Swaraj, and Foreign Secretary H.E.Dr. S. Jaishankar.

Foreign Minister Dr. Asim’s visit reiterates the Maldives “India First Policy” and is in sync with a long list of high profile visits to either country in the last few years.

In his interactions, Prime Minister H.E. Narendra Modi affirmed India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy and said that India would always be a reliable and close neighbour of Maldives, supporting it in its progress and security. Foreign Minister Dr. Mohamed Asim extended an invitation to the Prime Minister to visit the Maldives.

An official statement from the Ministry of External Affairs said: “Discussions centered on strengthening of the development partnership between India and Maldives and enhancing defence and security cooperation. The External Affairs Minister conveyed our commitment to achieving the full potential of our relationship in line with India’s neighbourhood first policy.”

The meetings were attended by H.E. Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Foreign Secretary, H.E. Ahmed Mohamed, Ambassador of Maldives in India, Ms. Aishath Azeema, Joint Secretary, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ms. Shazra Abdul Sattar, Deputy Chief of Mission.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim has undertaken an official visit to India, as the Special Envoy of His Excellency the President of the Maldives.

During his visit from 10-12 January 2018, Minister Asim called on H.E. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India and met his counterpart H.E. Ms. Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs of India.

During these meetings, both sides reflected on the close friendly relations between the Maldives and India.

Minister Asim conveyed greetings from His Excellency President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to His Excellency the Prime Minister of India. Highlighting President Yameen’s “India First Policy,” Minister Asim reiterated the importance of further strengthening the historical ties between the two countries. He further expressed gratitude to the Government of India for their valuable contribution towards the socio-economic development of the Maldives. Prime Minister Modi assured that the Maldives has, and will always remain, a close friend of India. Further, the Prime Minister assured that India would extend its support in all areas of cooperation.

During the visit, Foreign Secretary of India, H.E. Dr. S. Jaishankar, also paid a courtesy call on Minister Asim.

This afternoon, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim Minister of Foreign Affairs & Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Maldives visited the Maldives Embassy in New Delhi, India.

On his arrival, Dr. Asim was greeted by Amb Ahmed Mohammed, Maldives Ambassador to India.

 

Foreign Minister Dr. Asim is on a two-day official visit to India and will meet his Indian Counterpart Mrs. Sushma Swaraj, Hon’ble Minister of External Affairs.

Dr. Mohamed Asim will also call upon H.E. Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Accompanied by Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Foreign Secretary and Ms. Aishath Azeema, Joint Secretary, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim will also have bilateral talks with India’s Foreign Secretary Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
